Wiener Kammersymphonie – An Orchestra in Chamber Form

Imagine a string orchestra where each section is represented by a single musician. That’s the concept behind the Wiener Kammersymphonie – a unique ensemble that merges orchestral richness with chamber music finesse. In addition to performing original string quintets by composers like Antonín Dvořák, George Onslow, and Joseph Eybler, the ensemble is passionately committed to interpreting symphonic and operatic works arranged exclusively for this formation.

Based in Vienna and composed of top-level musicians, the group is united by a shared artistic vision: to blend their individual talents into one cohesive and dynamic musical experience.

Structured like an orchestra with a carefully selected core of musicians who rotate seamlessly and flexibly, the ensemble’s repertoire spans from Viennese Classicism to contemporary music.

Performing Worldwide

The Wiener Kammersymphonie performs across Europe and is regularly invited to renowned festivals and venues in South America – including Chile, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay, and Peru.

What the press says

Renowned for their expressive power and technical brilliance, the Wiener Kammersymphonie continues to impress audiences and critics alike. Their ability to evoke the grandeur of a full symphonic orchestra with just five string players has been described as nothing short of extraordinary.

…the string quintet Wiener Kammersymphonie, unrivaled performers for their intonation, soft timbre, and ironic descriptive depth…”
(Giornale dell’Umbria)

“The Wiener Kammersymphonie captures the grandeur of Beethoven’s symphonic language with extraordinary finesse. Particularly notable is the use of the fifth string—found only on orchestral double basses—which gave the ensemble a striking, at times seemingly limitless, depth. Their performance was fiery and inspired, with each musician playing at the height of their artistry. They succeeded brilliantly in evoking the richness and power of a full orchestra. The audience responded with a well-deserved, enthusiastic standing ovation.”
Jan-Willem van Ree, Program Director, Edesche Concertzaal

The concert concluded with Märchenbilder (Fairy Tale Pictures) by Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897–1957), the Jewish-Austrian composer who later became a naturalized American citizen and established his reputation in Hollywood, where he was awarded two Academy Awards for his film scores. His music is distinguished by its expressive charm, rich contrasts, and refined rhythmic and timbral invention. The ensemble offered a superb interpretation of this evocative work.

As encores, two pieces imbued with unmistakable Viennese spirit: Liebesleid (Love’s Sorrow) by Fritz Kreisler, and the exuberant polka Unter Donner und Blitz (Under Thunder and Lightning) by Johann Strauss. The captivated audience responded with warm and well-deserved ovations for the outstanding performers.
